Private instruction grounded in rigorous training in mathematics and statistics, with close attention to theory, notation, and reasoning.
I work with a small number of students each year in AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB/BC, and AP Precalculus, usually through the full arc of a course. I hold an M.S. in Statistics from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Mathematics. I have found that most difficulty in mathematics is specific. It can usually be traced to a particular idea, habit, or gap in understanding if someone is paying close enough attention.
The practice
Sessions are spent working, not watching. We solve problems together so I can see the reasoning as it forms in the setup, the notation, and the places where a student hesitates. Then I step back and let the student work independently. That is the clearest measure of what has actually taken hold.
I keep detailed notes from week to week. Over a term, the instruction becomes more precise as I learn how a student thinks, where difficulties tend to recur, and what still needs work.

Statistical services
In addition to private instruction, I accept a small number of projects in statistical analysis, statistical review, research support, and mathematics and statistics assessment.
My graduate training included statistical theory and methodology, statistical computing, and independent methodological research. I approach this work with close attention to study design, assumptions, model behavior, and the limits of what an analysis can establish.
This September
Early in the school year, I am offering two free 45-minute sessions on starting the year well. The AP Statistics session is Tuesday, September 22, and the AP Calculus session is Thursday, September 24. Both begin at 5:30 p.m. Pacific.
Everyone who registers will receive the getting-started guide for the course within a day, whether or not they attend.
The getting-started guide for your course
Before the term begins, I send a short guide for each course. It covers the habits that matter most early on, calculator and notation setup, the structure of the course and exam, and common mistakes worth avoiding.
